I was really interested to see Chuck Tingle departing from the usual fun, lightweight levity that makes all of his erotica so enjoyable and veer into horror. And I wasn't disappointed! This story still has Chuck's relentless sense of optimism, faith and love for all queer people, but also doesn't flinch away from openly being exhausted and frustrated with the ugly side of oppression. There's a lot of catharsis packed into seeing an author who normally makes loving, fun, lightweight work describe his protagonists' lack of guilt for bashing back. It's a short read, and incredibly transparent about its themes, but that's enjoyable, too! I'm so glad I picked this one up, thank you Mr. Tingle for proving love (and also that we're allowed to Be Angry) I was born a couple of years after The Twilight Zone’s initial run ended, and though I grew up loving the reruns, it wasn’t until late adolescence that I was able to fully appreciate the depth and breadth of the sociopolitical commentary Serling hid in plain sight, but by that time the hot takes had been cooled by time, cultural distance, and the thousands of creators who had trod in his footsteps ever since. So I’ve always regretted being born too late for that aspect of his work to fully hit me in a fresh and vitally contemporary lived sense.I’m now a middle-aged queer woman, and though straight people often forget, for folks like me, Covid is the second earth-shattering, life-altering pandemic we’re living through, and so this, Dr Chuck Tingle’s first foray into “straight” horror, hits incredibly close to home and speaks to my heart as a kindred voice navigating the same troubling seas at this very moment. And for the first time I’m able to really experience what it must have been like as a progressive, aware viewer in the late 50s, early 60s, encountering those iconic Twilight Zone episodes foe the first time while the topics were still hot and fresh and transgressive to be addressed so openly on mainstream tv, even if cloaked lightly in the guise of science fiction and horror.I love this book. It kept me on the edge of my seat right til the end.However, I would not be proving love if I held back on some constructive criticism for Dr Tingle. First, this book would have benefited by a read through with a fresh pair of eyes as there are numerous typos, editing artifacts, and grammar issues that unfortunately snap the reader right out of the spell he’s otherwise deftly weaving. And secondly, I think the first half of the book, prior to any actual action taking place, works much better in terms of sociopolitical commentary and subtext than the second half where he gets really heavy-handed with the “saying, not showing” what the big points he wants to make are. A little more confidence as a writer, and the restraint to not over explain, would have helped here, and maybe taking a bit more time to develop these ideas organically without having to literally spell them out.Overall, though, I am very pleased with this piece and I look forward to watching the good doctor continue to blossom and grow in his talents and continue proving love and moving hearts and minds.
